By Technician Ben Cochran
September 24, 2011

The Friday Night / E Crew members were in the middle of shift change when the station tones dropped around 0806 hrs for a BLS Auto Accident on Balls Ford Rd at Mason King Ct. PWC Communications reported that a vehicle had rear ended a semi tractor trailer and that the occupant of the car was having a medical emergency.

Upon arrival at the scene the vehicle was found wedged underneath the rear end of the trailer halfway up the windshield. Medic 511 and Ambulance 525 evaluated the single patient and determined that there was a need for a helicopter. As officer-in-training on Engine 511B I had command of the scene. I contacted PWC Communications and requested a helicopter. Then Medic 511 determined that the patient was trapped in the vehicle because her legs were pinned by the steering wheel. So I requested an extrication unit bringing Truck 511 and Rescue 504. With the Helicopter Air Care 1 en route from Manassas Airport I determined that Balls Ford Rd in that area was wide enough to provide a sufficient landing zone. Within 10 - 20 minutes the patient was extricated from the vehicle and being evaluated by Medic 511, Ambulance 525 and Helicopter Air Care 1.

Once the helicopter left to transport the patient to a local trauma center the EMS and Specialty units were released. Engine 511B remained on scene in order to block traffic for the police until the vehicle could be separated from the trailer. The engine finally went back in service by 1026 hrs.
